Rafe’s Chasm is a popular spot for sightseeing, photography, and enjoying the natural surroundings. Visitors can explore the beautiful rocky coastline, take in the breathtaking views of the Atlantic ocean and chasm, and immerse themselves in the tranquility of this natural coastal gem. It is important to note that Rafe’s Chasm is a rugged and rocky area, so it is advised to exercise caution when exploring the cliffs and ensure your safety at all times.

Rafe’s Chasm is located on Cape Ann, a scenic peninsula on the northeastern coast of Massachusetts. Cape Ann is known for its picturesque coastal towns, including Gloucester and Rockport, as well as its rich maritime history and vibrant arts scene.

This morning, parking was a breeze in Magnolia, a small neighborhood of Gloucester. My twenty minute walk to the chasm was an adventure on its own in the dim predawn light, first along the country road, not a car nor soul in sight, then through the woods and onto the rugged coastline. I was guided all the while by the soft sounds of crashing waves against the rocks. Gazing into the horizon, hues of orange had begun to paint the sky, welcoming the imminent arrival of the sun and new day.

After pausing and taking a deep breath of the fresh sea air, I quickly got to work with tripod and camera at hand. Determined to convey the natural beauty in one of my photographs, I scrambled across the rocks while looking for an interesting composition and perspective. At low tide the chasm itself was not really an option and appeared rather disappointing, so I settled on this small tide pool near the edge of the ocean. At 15mm focal length I was able to incorporate the rocks, tidal pool, ocean views and cloud formations. The sunrise light beautifully painted the rocks in warm hues that added to the appeal.

A small aperture setting of f/22 combined with a low ISO100 setting resulted in slow shutter speed of 5 seconds. The long exposure created a smooth ocean and the aperture provided a depth of field that kept foreground and background in focus. During post processing, I adjusted shadows, highlights, brightness, contrast, and color saturation before removing photo imperfections and sharpening the final Cape Ann seascape photography image of Gloucester Magnolia Rafe’s Chasm Park on Cape Ann Massachusetts.
