It’s always incredible to visit Cape Ann in Massachusetts. There are so many photo ops out there and one of the most famous and most iconic ones is Motif #1. This historic red fishing shack is located in Rockport, MA. Rockport and its harbor are a picturesque working harbor that is so worth to see at any time of the day or year.
This morning was great for Massachusetts sunrise photography as party cloudy skies were in the forecast. A three or four stretch of rain and clouds came to an end the day before and this usually makes for great New England photography opportunities. I started my journey at 4:45 am and arrived and hour and ten minutes later on location. Sunrise as around 6:15 am. Being a bit earlier at your photo destination always provides a quieter set-up and some time to check out compositions. The timing couldn’t have been better as color slowly came in upon arrival. Not too much longer into this photo adventure, Mother Earth decided to turn it on and burned up the sky. At this point I made my way over to this spot where I for photographed with a 16-35mm lens. I realized quickly that I needed to compose a tighter frame to eliminate any clutter in the background and also eliminate a couple of boats to the right of the picture. The 28-70mm was perfect for the job as it also allowed to capture a landscape format image of this New England harbor scenery. The sunrise magic didn’t last too long and only allowed for a few photos but the beautiful golden hour light thereafter was incredible too and allowed for some additional compositions from different view points and photographs.
Canon D5 equipped with a 28-70mm lens at 50mm and an aperture of f/16 provided an exposure time of 1/2 a second at ISO100. During post processing I brightened the image, adjusted contrast, color saturation, removed dust and image imperfections before sharpening the final New England photography image of Sunrise Across Rockport Harbor.
